He was son of Benjamin Smith Sr. and Jedidah Mayhew, and husband of Mary Bassett. His inscription reads:

Here lyes Buried
ye Body of
BENJAMIN SMITH
Esqr. Who Departed
this Life, Decembr 18th,
Anno Domni 1737 in ye
46th Year of His Age

He was Representative to the General Court in 1726, 1726, and 1728. (From the" History of Martha's Vineyard", by Charles Edward Banks.)

His will was proved Jan. 23, 1737/38.

Benjamin and Mary had one daughter, Jedidah Smith, who m. Judge John Sumner.
