Carl was born near Lucas, the third child of Andrew Vinton & Minnie Ethel (Haines) Cottrell. He attended rural schools around the Lucas and Derby areas.
On Jan. 24, 1924 he married Margaret McGill. They spent the early years of their married life farming in Clarke County. In 1939 they purchased a farm in Washington Township, south of Russell, where he lived until retirement. They were the parents of four children.
After Carl & Margaret divorced, he sold the farm and moved to Chariton.
On June 28, 1968 he married Fern Wiant. They made their home in Chariton where he died unexpectedly at the age of 76 yr. 5 mos.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Vint & Minnie; an infant son; and brothers, Clarence, Dewey, Lawrence, and Hermann.
Survivors included his son, Dale(Fern)Cottrell; daughters, Ethel(Harry)Prough; Doris(Ron)Christensen; grandchildren, Marilyn(Rodney)Masters; Ronald Prough; Rhonda(Larry) Richard; Linda(Larry)Chase, Joyce(Mike)Thomas, Janet (Dewey)Abrahamson, Chris, Kevin & Cory Christensen; nine great-grandchildren and sister, Dora Hickman.
Also two step-sons, Charles(Jeri)Wiant and Rex(Helen)Wiant and their children, Ralph, Charles, Leslie, Rex.
