Aged 68y 8m 18d; pneumonia. Sarah's husband Francis died 3 days later of pneumonia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Death, which Friday claimed the mother, yesterday stalked again into the house household of Francis M. Hough, and, upon its second visitation, took the father, Mr. Hough. The sorrowful chapter will witness its finish sometime Thursday when, in a double funeral service, rites will be said over the remains of the husband and wife. Their burial together will follow. If they had lived, on February 25 next, they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Pathetic circumstances, accentuated because of the fact that the two deaths which have come almost simultaneously are the first that have brought bereavement to the Hough family, surround the passing of the two.
Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hough, the wife and mother, a short time ago, took down with pneumonia. She was removed to St. John's hospital where, Friday, she died. That same day her husband, Francis M. Hough, who had been sick, also was removed to the hospital, he likewise, suffering from pneumonia. The wife and husband were placed in rooms on the same floor, next door to each other. Mrs. Hough was not told of her husband's arrival at the hospital because of fear that her condition might be aggravated.
When Mrs. Hough passed away, anxious members of the family, the surviving children, feared the shock would kill their father- so they did not tell him, hoping to keep him in ignorance of their first sorrow in order that his chances for recovery might, possibly, be enhanced.
The two days, Saturday and Sunday passed, and Mr. Hough's condition grew worse. Still, the children dreaded to tell him of their mother's death, hoping that the father had a chance to live and not daring to jeopardize that chance.
The end came at 11:25 o'clock yesterday morning, however, with the husband still ignorant of his wife's death. His remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of Charles T. Bisch and Son, where they were laid side by side, and some time today they will be removed to the residence of the decedents' only son, Ollie E. Hough, where they will lie until the hour of the double funeral on Thursday.
Mr. Hough was aged 69 years, 1 month and 4 days. The couple are survived by four daughters and one son: Mrs. Minnie Braham, Mrs. Mary B. Rand, Mrs. Bessie German, of this city, and Mrs. Carrie Egan, of Los Angeles, Cal., and Ollie E., the son. Twenty-one grand children and three great grand children also are left.
