My dad, Marvin Edmund Burnes, Jr. was born in Greenville, South Carolina on March 24, 1927. He was a son of the late Marvin E. Burnes, Sr. (DOD: 12/8/1940) and the late Grace Louise Clement Burnes (DOD: 12/24/1979). My dad had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County most of his adult life and attended Darlington School. He was a retired pipe fitter and steam fitter with Local 766 and was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion. Dad was a veteran (44131443) of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal. He was married in Haralson County, Georgia in December 1948 to my mom, the former Kathryn Onez McCurry. Dad was preceded in death by his only brother, Wiley Bascomb Burnes, who died in Orange County, California May 25, 1990. Two sisters, Betty Jean Higgins who died in Cobb County, GA in March 1978, and Doris Vescovi who died in Floyd County, GA on 11/24/1999 also preceded him in death. A nephew, Steven David Vescovi, died in Floyd County, GA 04/30/1981.

Survivors include: his wife, (now deceased) Kathryn Onez McCurry Burnes of Rome; two sons, Craig Scott Burnes and his wife (now deceased) Sandra, of Dalton, GA and Jonathan Van Burnes and his wife Tootsie, Rome, GA; Four grandchildren; Sara Elizabeth Burnes Jones of Cohutta, GA and formerly of St. Marys, Georgia; Beverly Shamblin of Trion, GA; Emily and Holly Burnes, both of Rome, GA. One great-grandson; Alexander (Alex) Haven Andrews of Cohutta, GA and formerly of St. Marys, GA. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 29, 2008 at 11 AM at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Murdock officiating. Interment followed in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The following men served as active casket bearers. They included: Mike Worthington, Douglas Christie, Ricky Minshew, Bradley Robinson, Alan Weeks, David Cescutti, Yank Payne and G.A. McNiece.
