Leonard was married twice. Little evidence of his first marriage can be found. In 1945 Leonard married Thelma Eloise Peters. Shortly after, their first child was born - Linda Marie. Three years later, in December 1948, their second child was born; Robert Wayne. In 1956, Leonard and Thelma were killed in a car accident on "dead man's curve" between Cheneyville and Lecompte, where they lived. Leonard owned and operated a bar with, interestingly, a "colored" bar in back. Thelma operated a salon from their home.
Unfortunately, their families failed to care for the children and they eventually were given over to Catholic Social Services. The children grew up in separate orphanages. Leonard and Thelma's funeral Mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in her hometown of Oakdale, in Allen Parish. They are also buried there.
