Rathie was committed to the Talihina Sanitarium with tuberculosis and subsequently died there. At the time of his death there was a dispute between the Sanitarium and the town of Talihina as to who would pay for the funeral so Rathie and another patient were buried in a field just outside the Old Talihina Cemetery. Within the year the state stepped in and resolved the conflict and Rathie and the other patient were re-interred in the Old Talihina Cemetery, however, their graves are unmarked.
