Adam was the son of Adam Bahn, Sr., who was born Feb 1819 in York Co., PA, and died on July 16, 1901, in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio. His mother is Rebecca Lehman Bahn, born 1815 in York Co., PA, and died June 30, 1857, in Ohio.

He had a sister, Sarah Jane Bahn, born 14 April 1845 in Ohio. She never married and took care of her dad and 3 younger brothers after her stepmother Ruth Ann passed away. Siblings by Adam, Sr., and Ruth Ann who married around 1859 are Allen C., Lewis and Edward Bahn.

Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 27 August 1862 at the age of 22. While the regiment was on garrison duty at Decatur, AL, on 24 September 1864, Private Bahn was assigned to a detachment whose mission was to relieve Ft. Henderson at nearby Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. After detraining, the detachment began fighting to gain the fort, and had made good progress, when the commander of the fort suddenly surrendered. Forrest then forced the detachment, including Private Bahn, to surrender as well. Bahn was taken to Cahaba Prison, but was exchanged on 22 April 1865. He died in the explosion and sinking of the steamer Sultana near Memphis, TN, on 27 April 1865 on his way home.
