Daniel Bowers lived his entire life as a farmer in the Millingport community of Stanly County, NC. He married Susan Burleson on Dec. 9, 1852 and together they had six children. Daniel was conscripted into the Confederate Army and served as a private in Company F, 5th NC Infantry. On May 6, 1864 Daniel was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia and was imprisoned in New York until the end of the war. On May 29, 1865 he was paroled and returned to Millingport where he lived the remainder of his life.
