Bill Carpenter served in the US Army for about 10 years. He died in 1934 of pulmonary tuberculosis. He was married to Anvy Janey and had two children, Betty Jane and a son who is still living. He traveled from Campbell Co. to Breathitt Co. after he became ill to be with his mother. He died and was buried in Breathitt County. His wife and son returned to her home state and his daughter Betty, then 4, stayed with and was raised by Bill's mother Sarah. It is believed his father, John Carpenter, died before Bill was around the age of 10. Bill's tombstone provides a different date of death than his death certificate.
