Van Martin was the eldest child of James Henry and Sarah Jane Patterson Martin. His mother died before he was six years old. His step-mother, Avey Morrow Martin raised the three older Martin children and those born into the family. Van entered the Navy at the San Diego Naval Station about the time of WWI. He was still serving in 1920 aboard the USS Salem, according to the 1920 US Census for San Diego Co, CA. Van settled in Muskogee, Oklahoma and married Jewel Martin sometime in 1926. He was a manager for a Dry Cleaning business in Muskogee according to the 1930 US Census for Muskogee Co, OK. Van died from a gunshot wound.
