He was born May 19, 1900 at Kemmerer, Wyo. to Ammi Alonzo and Susanna Jolley Jensen Shumway, the sixth child in a family of nine. The family moved to Fairview when he was 11 months old. he had more than his share of illnesses, but through faith and loving care recovered from them. His father died when he was five years old, leaving the large family almost destitute after his long illness, so the older children had to work to help support the family.
Leon lived with his grandparents for a few years and helped with the chores. He attended grade school in Fairview and tow years of high school in Afton.
At an early age he learned to cook and opened the first cafe in Afton to serve short orders at any time of day. He soon became well known for his banana cream pie, and made many customers and friends with it.
On Jan 3, 1927 he was married to Gladys Orissa Allred at Paris, Idaho. Two months later their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He was grieved at the loss of his only son who died at birth, but was proud and happy with his four daughters. He was a talented person, especially in music, and song solos, with duets and quartets, participated in operettas, played the accordion, organ and piano. and served as organist or chorister in most of the wards in which he resided.
He was an Elder int he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught Sunday School and was a ward or home teacher for many years.
In 1931 Leon homesteaded 160 acres in the narrows, clearing a lot of land and building three cabins and a log home. He later sold this property and moved to Fairview, where he built a home.
He loved to feed people and wanted to fix everyone something to eat. He said" If you feed people you will never be without food in your home". At the time of his death he was living at his business place in Forest Dell, which he operated during the summer months. He enjoyed the visit of relatives and friends, who came to pass the time of day and eat his delicious pie. He was happy to help missionaries, grandchildren and friends.
