Nelson Durant Gatch, of Walterboro, departed this life for Heavenly eternal rest September 25, 2008.

Nelson was a son of the late John Edward Gatch and the late Carrie Elizabeth Beach Gatch.

He served his country in the Untied States Navy from September 1942 until January 1946, where he saw action during World War II and achieved the rank of Gunners Mate 3rd Class. He then worked and retired form the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was an electrician.

Nelson was awarded such honors by The Commander of the Charleston Naval Shipyard as: The Superior Achievement Award of Outstanding Job Performance, Certificate of Recognition for Personal Responsibility and Daily Effort Award, Certificate of Merit, which was awarded for exhibiting an unusual degree of skill and excellence through the United States Naval Training School; and he also cited for superior achievement on two separate occasions.

He was a former member of Canaan Baptist Church at Canadys where he served on the Deacon Board, and was currently a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro.

Nelson will be remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father; and was thought of by many that there was not a better man in the world. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and will be remembered by all for his sense of humor.

Surviving are his dear wife of sixty years, Mrs. Eloise Browning Gatch; four sons, Nelson Durant "Randy" Gatch, Jr. and wife Donna of Quincy, Florida, Terry Michael Gatch and wife Jennifer of Walterboro, Glenn Arthur Gatch of Walterboro, and James Robert "Bobby" Gatch and wife LuAnn of Savannah, GA; a sister, Carmelita Gatch Swanson of Goose Creek and two grandchildren, David Gatch and Courtney Gatch.

Interment was with military honors provided by the United States Navy.
