Alexander was the second child born to Robert and Lucinda Mitchell McMillan. Although being born in Stewardson Furnace,Armstrong County,he grew up in Allegheny City. Alex was a Miller and enjoyed racing Sculls in and around Pittsburgh.
Alexander was married twice. In 1880 he married Bessie Ellsworth Skiles. There were three children born to this marrige, Maggie May 4/27/81-11/11/94,Lucinda 2/15/83-9/14/85 and Bessie Alexander6/9/84-1885. A family story has Bessie dieing when giving birth to her third child. He then married Mary Ellen Dowden, in 1887.They were married fifty six years and had eleven children.
