John Hilton was age 23 and a fisherman by occupation when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 13, 1861, at Boston, Massachusetts, for the war (meaning a term of 3 years), as an Ordinary Seaman, to the credit of Boston. He served on the Receiving Ship OHIO, at the Naval Station at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and aboard the U.S.S. TAHOMA. He was taken prisoner on October 7, 1863, and eventially confined at Camp Sumter, Andersonville, Georgia, as a Prisoner of War, where he died of diarrhea. He is buried in grave 2215.
