John Young, 93, veteran of the Civil war, and one of the few remaining members of the G.A.R. in Garfield county, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.H. Nuckolls, and Mr. Nuckolls, north of Fairmont, Friday morning. Mr. Young had been in failing health for a year. On November 5, he celebrated his ninety-third birthday at the Irvin McDowell G.A.R. post and auxiliary members were his guests that day. Mr. Young was born in Picknay county, Ohio, in 1842. At the age of 20 he entered the Union army as a private and saw active service until the close of the war. He fought in a number of major battles and at the close of the war marched to Washington where he was in the grand review. He moved to Fairmont in 1910 and had resided here since that time. Mr. Young was a member of the Methodist church of Breckinridge and was a faithful attendant, never missing a service when his health would permit him to attend. His wife preceded him in death two years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Nuckolls, two sons, Charles and Sam Young of Fairmont, and one brother, G. Young, who lives in Ohio.
The passing of Mr. Young is to be deeply regretted by a host of friends and acquaintances. He was a cheery, happy disposition and especially loved by all who knew him. I know I voice the sentiment of everyone when I say, "He was a grand old man." Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Breckinridge with Rev. E.W. Fickinger and Rev. F.L. Templin conducting the services. Four members of the G.A.R. attended the last rites, and the ladies of the D.A.R. paid him their last tribute of respect. The remains were interred in the Enid cemetery. A salute was fired and "Taps" sounded as the body was laid to rest.
