Family lore says that the Mornwig name was shortened from Mornhenwig. All of George's military records and death certificate show his name as Mornwig. After finding the marriage record for George and his first wife, Margretha, whom he married in Kings County, New York, on June 1, 1871, I'm pleased to say that this is one family story that apparently is true. George was married to Margretha under the surname Mornhenwig.
