Early Valley Pioneer Dies At Maeser

Funeral services for George Finley Britt, 86, who died Tuesday at 5 a.m. at the home of his son Leon Britt of a heart ailment, were held today at 2 p.m. in the Maeser L.D.S. ward chapel. Lester Bingham, ward Bishop, officiated. Burial was in Rock Point cemetery in Maeser.

Mr. Britt, retired government employee, was born June 20, 1857 in Mills County, Iowa and was one of the four original pioneers of the Ashley Valley in 1877. He was the remaining survivor of that group which included his brother Wm Britt, ??? Dodds, and S. P. Dillman.

He married Miss Maria Merkley in Morgan county in 1882. She died in 1924. He was a member of the Prebyterian church. Mr. Britt was employed many years by the government as commissary manager on numerous localities until retiring. At that time he moved to Maeser where he had since resided and operated a farm.

He is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Gladys Massey, Mrs. Marie McClean [?] and Mrs. Helen Holfeltz, all of Maeser; Mrs. Jennie Rhodes of Vernal and Mrs. Linna Gallbreath [?] of Oakland, Calif. and three sons: George and Keith Britt of Tacoma, Wash. and Leon Britt of Maeser.

George Finley Britt was the son of Rhoda and Franklin LeRoy Britt.

He married Susan Maria Merkley November 18, 1882 in Vernal, Uintah County, Utah. To this union they had eleven chilren: Linnia Britt, George Finley Britt, Rhoda Britt, Grace Britt, Keith Britt, Gladys Britt, Jennie Britt, Leon "Lynn" Britt, Marie Britt, Marguerite Britt and Mary Helen Britt.

His wife, Susan died in 1924. He then married Gertrude Merkley.
