Jim died on the battlefield near Murfreesboro, TN on 12/12/1861 of typhoid fever. He was married on 8/18/1859 to Margaret Ann Mart in Medarryville, Clinton Co., Ohio. He left behind a wife and two children: Newton Alhambra and Emily Elizabeth McKay. Their widowed mother soon married Loami Rigdon Gallaher, Jim's best friend who had stayed behind because of a broken kneecap, rendering him unfit for service. Loami had been asked by Jim to "look after Maggie" while he was gone. He died at age 21.

Information from the US Civil War "Widows' Pensions" File WC 18155 - dated April 1863: Margaret A McCay, Clinton County, Ohio, widow of James D McCay alias McKay, mustered in August 20, 1962 as a Private in Company C, 79th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, died at Gallatin, Tennessee, Hospital No 1 on Dec 12, 1862 of typhoid fever and probably buried near by. He was later moved to his final burial and resting place on Nov 27, 1863, in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee. Source: Pages 3 & 16 of Margaret's Pension Record.

I did discover that James Douglas McCay's name was changed to McKay by the government during the Civil War. His son, Newton McKay, used the K instead of the C.
