Ethel "Honey" Showers, 100, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Bethalto Care Center.
Born April 22, 1908, in Chesterfield, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward Elkinton and Musa (Campbell) Elkinton Mullins.
On Oct. 15, 1925, in Carlinville, she married Warden "Poppy" Showers. They were married for 58 years. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1983.
Mrs. Showers worked at Milton Cleaners and Wardein Cleaners and for Owens Illinois Glass. When she lived in Carlinville, she did laundry out of her home and when she was living in California, she worked for Bullocks Department Store, where she was a "fancy presser" of special occasion dresses, especially for the Hollywood clientele. She enjoyed quilt making and displayed her quilts at fairs. She also enjoyed doll-making, textile painting and ceramics. She was a member of and enjoyed attending Calvary Baptist Church in Alton and especially liked being greeted by the "fellers" at church.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Norman Showers and his wife, Norma, of Alton and the Rev. Jack Showers (Maj. U.S. Air Force Retired) of Avon, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Showers of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lura Schulz and her husband, Hugo, of Oxnard, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert G. Showers; a great-grandson, Jeremy Stephen Leigh; a daughter-in-law, Betty Showers; four brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. The Revs. Ken Griffin and Rick Patrick will officiate.
Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, The Gideons or the Achievement Resource Center in Wood River.
