KILLED AT BASKETBALL GAME
Searcy County Farmer is Slain and Several Persons Injured.
D. V. Shannon, age 51, a veteran Searcy County teacher on the 26th of December was ordered held under bonds of $2,000 on a charge of murder following the death on the 25th of Newton Massey, 40, a well known farmer. Massey was instantly killed when struck on the neck with a stone during a free-for-all fight at a basketball game at the mouth of Cellar creek, 12 miles north of Marshall.
Cecil Shannon, son of D. V. Shannon and a member of the Bear Hollow team, got into an argument with Goldman Treat of the Landis five. The two youths started a fist fight and spectators joined in. Stones, club, sticks, fists and knives were used as weapons.
