Was on the census for Sønderby, Assens, Fyn, Denmark in 1840. Was on the census for Sønderby, Assens, Fyn, Denmark for 1850. Confirmed on 3 Apr 1852 in Sønderby, Assens, Fyn, Denmark. p. 93 line #4; also index, p 296 line #28. Religion: Lutheran.
Mads "Mates" came to America with his uncle, Hans Madsen, on the "Resolute", leaving Liverpool June 1859, arriving in The Port of New York August 18, 1859. (LDS film #0175550) Two brothers also came to America: Ander and Lars "Louis" Rasmussen.

"Rasmussen.--Mates Rasmussen, aged sixty-nine years, four months and eight days, died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Stoneback, three miles southwest of Morganville, Tuesday morning, at two o'clock. The cause of death was due to paralysis. The deceased was an early settler in Clay county but for a number of years had been in poor health.
Besides his widow there are five children who mourn the loss of husband and father. There were two sons, Theodore and Hiram, and three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Stoneback, Mrs. John Purves and one other whose name we did not learn, all of whom live in the vicinity of Morganville.
The funeral was held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in the German M.E. church, Rev. Hamilton officiating. The interment was made in the cemetery near the church."

"Rasmussen.--Mates Rasmussen was born March 13, 1839 near Odense, Denmark, died July 21, 1908, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. G. Stoneback, near Morganville, aged 69 years, 4 months, and 8 days, death being due to paralysis.
Mr. Rasmussen united with the Lutheran church at the age of fourteen years, and came to American in 1859, He was a brick layer and stone mason by trade. During the civil war, he served in the United States navy on the lower Mississippi, and then went to Wisconsin and Illinois, where he spent a few years, coming to Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1865, being married the same year (October 15, 1865) to Miss Louisa Roenigk at St. Louis, MO. To this union were born ten children, six daughters and four sons, four of whom died in infancy, one in manhood. Those living are Theodore C., Hiram M., Mrs. Florence McKinney, Mrs. Anna Stoneback, and Mrs. Emma Purves.
After spending a few years in Manhattan, Mr. Rasmussen homesteaded in Clay county in the year of 1870, where he has passed the remaining years of his life.
A wife, five children, seven grandchildren, three brothers, one uncle and a host of friends are left to mourn his departure."
