"The remains of Mrs. John L. Somerby, who died in Los Angeles, California, December 21st, were brought to Viroqua and laid to rest on Saturday in our city cemetery, where rest so many of her kindred. She was the second daughter of the late Dr. E. W. and Mary Tinker, pioneer residents of Viroqua. She was born in Rosseau, Morgan county, Ohio, in 1840 coming with her parents to Viroqua in 1854. In 1859 she was married to Louis R. Decker who died in 1887. To this marriage were born two sons, Frank E. and Louis R., who died in young manhood, and one daughter, Mrs. L. F. Danforth of Lake City, Iowa.
In 1900 Mrs. Decker was married to J. L. Somerby of Los Angeles, California, who died two years later, leaving to her care his two little boys to whom she was both father and mother. She saw them mature into splendid young manhood, rewarding her with all the devotiona and solicitude of sons. One of them Eugene, accompanied the remains to Viroqua. She is survived by the daughter, Mrs. L. F. Danforth, two grandsons, Max L. Decker of Sioux City and Arthur L. Decker of Council Bluffs, Iowa, one granddaughter, Mrs. Ruth Wallace of Council Bluffs, the two sons, Eugene C. and Walter L. Somerby of Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Stimble of Richland Center, and Mrs. Lucie Tate of Chugwater, Wyoming.
Before leaving Los Angeles, funeral services were conducted by Rev. Herbert Booth Smith of the Immanuel Presbyterian church of which Mrs. Somerby and sons are members. Here Rev. Emmanuel Harris had charge.
