John Beard was born January 7, 1839 in Hancock County, Ohio to Amos and Susannah (Price) Beard. He died March 26, 1917 at his home in Sumner, Illinois, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 19 days.
He was married December 24, 1861 to Amanda Zana Shaw in Marysville, Ohio. To this union were born 10 children, four of which died in infancy. At his departure he leaves behind him his wife, six children: W. G. Beard, Bonnie,Ill., Harry S. Beard, Belmont, Ill., L. N. Beard, Billet, Ill., and Ennis R. Beard, Peoria, Ill., 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The deceased enlisted in the service of his country in the Civil War. He was a member of Co. F of the 13th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted April 25, 1861 and served three months when he was mustered out on account of illness.
Mr. Beard united with the Antioch Christian Church west of Sumner, some 30 or 40 years ago and later transferred his membership to the Sumner Christian Church, where he was a member at the time of his death.
The deceased and his wife lived together here in this life of mingled joys and sorrows for more than 55 years. May an eternal life of nothing but joy and happiness be theirs together in the world to come.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock at the Sumner Christian Church, conducted by Rev. J. A. Tracey, with internment at Antioch, Cemetery.
