Co. I, 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Pleasant died of smallpox on the 9th of March 1864. He was the main support of the family at home. It was not unusual for soldiers who had been the main support of ill and/or elderly parents and siblings to send Army pay home to them. Each time it got through they were able to purchase needed food supplies. He would have contracted out to other farmers for work and taken either pay or food in exchange for pay. We know that he sent $40.00 to them. There was no mail delivery since the Confederates were in control of the area. The only way was to trust the money to a comrade who snook home to see family. Sometimes the man was captured and the money never reached the family. Sometimes the comrade did not deliver it. In this case a comrade going home on furlough took it.
