WILMA GATES MILNES

Brown County native Wilma Gates Milnes, 83, of Hoover Road, died Friday, February 8, 1991, at the home of her son, James A. Milnes, of Hoover Road.

Mrs. Gates was a member of the Gates family that settled the community of Gatesville on Salt Creek Road. She and her husband also operated the Milnes Grocery in southern Marion County during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

She was born May 10, 1907, in Brown County, the daughter of William David and Alice Ann Robinson Gates. She married John Daniel Milnes March 27, 1924 in Columbus. He died September 19, 1983.

Mrs. Gates was a member of the Neighborhood Church of God on Sweetwater Trail.

Other survivors include another son, Ernest L. Milnes of Kansas City, Kansas; two sisters, Hazel Neff of Greenwood and Ethel Pruitt of Columbus; a brother, Earl Gates of Greenwood; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday at the Meredith-Clark Funeral Home with the Reverend Sam Harrington officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood.

Wilma (Gates) Milnes, 83, died Friday at her son's residence in Brown County. She was a resident of Gatesville, and had formerly lived in Johnson County.

She was born May 10, 1907, in Gatesville to William D. Gates and Alice A. (Robinson) Gates. She was married to a John D. Milnes, who preceded her in death Sept. 19, 1983.

Survivors include two sons, James A. Milnes of Gatesville and Ernest L. Milnes of Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Hazel Neff of Greenwood and Ethel Pruitt of Columbus; one brother, Earl Gates of Greenwood; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Milnes, and two brothers and two sisters.

She and her husband owned Milnes Grocery in southern Marion County during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

She was a member of the Neighborhood Church of God in Brown County.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Meridith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown with the Rev. Sam Harrington officiating. Calling will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
