As a young man, he became an Eagle Scout and then served in the US Navy during 1943 to 1945. After discharge, he began a business drilling and blasting rock for roads, quarries, and ditch lines, etc.
He married Leta Mae Brandt of Yoncalla, Oregon on June 21, 1947 and over time, they had four children. His young family moved often as he held various construction jobs but finally settled in Central Point, Oregon. He retired there in 1986 and both he and Leta Mae became missionaries to Kenya, Africa.
Lyle said that he was going to Kenya to " spread the gospel and to dig water wells for the country's poor." An account of Lyle's death in Kenya appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer October 5, 1986 by David Zucchino, Staff Writer. It is titled "A Mission Turns Deadly in Kenya Spreading Gospel, An American Falls Victim to Cultural Clash." Lyle died of a heart attack and his wife accompanied his body back to his childhood home in Parkdale, Oregon.
