"Carrie Funk was born on the farm of her parents near Colesburg on April 27, 1862, and grew to young womanhood there. In 1881 she became the wife of Ezra Coates, then engaged in farming north of Delaware, and they remained there until 1907, when removal was made to the village itself. In 1918 the family went to Doland, S.D., where the father died in 1927 at the age of 86 years. Since his death, Mrs. Coates has lived among her children.
"Surviving Mrs. Coates are three children; Mrs. Ruth Hall of San Francisco, Calif; Ernest L. Coates, a farmer of Doland, S.D. and Mrs. Izora Wilkins of Chicago, together with 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She had long been a member of the Methodist Church and will be remembered by old friends of the family as a devoted wife and mother and a truly good woman whose life was one of sacrificial service."
