From Joanne Scobee Morgan:
George Washington Young, a farmer of Elm Township0, native of Washington Co., KY, born 1822, eldest of eleven children of Jacob and Elizabeth Stumpf Young, natives of N. Carolina and KY. who were married in KY about 1818. In 1826 they moved to Ralls Co., MO., then to Putnam Co. in 1840, where they spent the rest of their lives. His father was a volunteer in the Black Hawk and Mexican wars. He died in 1851. Elizabeth died in 1867. She was a member of the Christian Church.
George lived at home with his parents during his youth, but on account of poor educational advantages offered by Ralls Co. in that early day, received but a meager education. He accompanied his parents to Putnam Co. and in 1844 married Miss Eliza, daughter of Jesse and Nancy Trewitt, a native of Morgan Co., Tenn. Thirteen children were born, Richard J., Lucinda (Mrs. J. T. Wells), Geo. W., Jr., Sarah, (Mrs. Wesley Vermillion), Andrew C., John A., Rachel E. (Mrs. David Slinkenbeard?), William Shannon, Sheridan and Abraham Lincoln. At the commencement of the Rebellion, Mr. Young enlisted in Co. E., 18 Mo Infantry and operated mostly in northern MO. He served as corporal part of the time. Did not receive a wound nor was he captured.
He is an early settler of Putnam Co. and was well acquainted with Black Hawk, with whom he often hunted. He was a Whig before the war, but has since become a Republican. His first presidential vote was cast for Clay in 1844. He is a member of G.A.R.
