The Lineage of Grace Edna Nicholas is as follows:

Maternal Lineage: GRACE⁴ EDNA NICHOLAS (Cora³ Virilla Brainard, Violet²Catherine Nicol, Margaret¹ Pollock from Scotland)

Paternal Lineage: GRACE⁴ EDNA NICHOLAS ( Benjamin³, Henry², John¹ Nicholas) from Penbrokeshire, Wales

GRACE EDNA NICHOLAS Rowe (88) was born Sept 5, 1890 in the loft of her father's blacksmith shop in Lake Park, Dickenson Co., Iowa died: Sept 1, 1978 in Oceanside, San Diego Co., CA. She was the third of four children (Violet, Harold, Grace, John) born to Benjamin Daniel Nicholas (from Pembrokeshire, Wales) and Cora Virilla Brainard (originally from St. Lawrence Co., NY) . " I, Grace, came to Mitchell County, Iowa from Lake Park, Dickenson Co., Iowa in a covered wagon. Compare that speed to our freeways. Our motel was a quilt on the bottom of the wagon with a sack of oats for a pillow. Mother (Cora Virilla Nicol-Brainard Nicholas) had baked and fixed up a big box of food as in those days you couldn't stop at a store or get a loaf of bread or some canned goods, nothing like that was on the market. We'd stop once in a while and fill our water jug at a farm house."*

Her paternal grandparents were Henry Nicholas and Mary Bevan originally from Pembrokeshire, Wales. Her maternal grandparents were James Brainard and Violet Catherine Nicol (Scottish) from St. Lawrence Co. New York.

In 1900, when Grace was only nine years old, her mother Cora (37) died of tuberculosis, Grace was at her bedside. "My mother died when I was nine years old. We four children struggled along trying to keep house and remember no modern conveniences in those days, no bakery or canned goods. We churned our own butter." The family was living in David, Mitchell county, Iowa at the time where her father operated a Farmer and Implement store. He also owned 80 acres on the West half of Section 12 in Liberty Township in Mitchell county. Their property was 1 mile West of the David Community Church.

On Feb. 1, 1903 when Grace was 13, she and her father joined the Free Will Baptist Church now known as the David Community Church, David, IA.

In 1902 her widowed father remarried widower Alphreda Robbins, whose husband had been shot while defending the David Hotel keeper's family. The only murder ever committed in David, Iowa. "Three years later my father remarried. My step mother had six boys so that made ten of us children. She was very good to us and we got along fine. She was still alive in 1957 and was 89 years old. We all worked hard but we had our good times too, especially when the folks made the long trip to Osage, Iowa 17 miles away for supplies. We sure got our work done in a hurry and then off to the creek for a boat ride in a boat made from a hog trough. The water was deep and my sister (Violet) fell over board but we got a hold of one arm and pulled her to safety. "*

In the winter time we nearly raised the roof playing show, etc. You may wonder what we did in the evenings when the folks were home. We usually played dominoes, authors, or other games or cracked nuts. There were lots of hazelnuts we gathered seventeen grain sacks full one fall and with our hammer and flat irons we had a cracking good time, but always before bed time we had Bible reading and prayer. *

Grace met her future husband, Charley Henry Rowe, when she worked as hired help on his father, Percy Rowe's, farm just outside of Lake Park, Iowa.

Grace Nicholas married CHARLES HENRY ROWE , son of Percy Augustus Rowe, Dec. 18, 1912 in David, Mitchell Co., Iowa. They first lived in Dickenson County, Lake Park, Iowa where their three children, Ralph, Dorothea and Charles Rowe were born. Her father was the first Blacksmith in Lake Park, Iowa at the time.

The family moved from Lake Park, IA to Kirksville, MO and then to Twin Brook, SD and on to Marvin, SD. In 1937 they moved back to Mitchell County, IA to farm 80 acres of land in Mitchell county, IA just 2 miles west of David, IA which Grace inherited from her uncle Henry David Ross Brainard who married later in life and had no children.

They farmed near 2 miles west of David, IA until 1956 when they moved to Compton, CA and retired to live near their daughter, Dorotha, whose husband was a Church of God minister. Briefly they lived in Salem, OR when Dorotha's husband, Gunner Jorgensen, moved there, but then they moved to the top of the hills overlooking Brea, CA and managed a plant nursery owned by Mr. Tinker. They were active members in the Missionary Alliance Church in Brea, CA.

Evelyn Rowe, granddaughter, spent the summer of 1961 with them at that Plant Nursery where they also raised chickens, and had a few calves and a pasture with 4 horses. Her grandfather, Charles, would read the Bible every evening with her grandmother, Grace, and Evelyn. This had a positive Christian influence on Evelyn. Grace was nearly blind, as she had a detached retina in the mid-1950s. She could still sew, keep a clean house and loved to go thrift shopping and cook great meals. Her beautiful smile and sense of humor made her an adorable grandmother. She died in Oceanside, CA living with her daughter, Dorotha (Rowe) Jorgensen, when she was 3 days away from her 88th birthday. She turned over to me historical photos of my ancestors that have helped trace the family lines. The Rowe family bible was passed on to Evelyn along with historical pictures of all sides of the family.
