The Langford community was saddened by the passing of one of our beloved and highly respected citizens when John Nicholas passed away at the Britton Hospital following a heart attack . John was a member of the Langford Methodist Church and took an active part in all church activities . He served as treasurer , Sunday School superintendent and teacher of a boys class. His Bible was never far away from his favorite chair at home.

JOHN BENJAMIN NICHOLAS b. Aug. 7, 1894 d. Mar. 28, 1962 was the youngest of four children (Violet, Harold, Grace, John) born to Benjamin Daniel Nicholas (1863-1920) and Cora Virilla Brainard (1860-1900) of Mitchell County, Iowa.


John was born in Lake Park, Dickenson County, Iowa above his father's Blacksmith Shop and spent his childhood years in David, Mitchell County, Iowa where his father was the Farmer and Implement Dealer., did blacksmith work, and farmed. His father was born in Penbrokeshire, Wales. His mother was born in DeKalb, St. Lawrence Co., New York.


John served during WWI (Iowa) and was in France about 14 months. He was a member of the Henry Osness Legion Post and a member of the Langford, SD School Board of Education (1940-1941)

In May 10, 1960 he completed 40 years of service as Station Agent for the Milwaukee Railroad and had begun to enjoy his retirement.

He was a Station Agent in David, Iowa (1910-1920)and was the last David, IA Depot Agent before it closed . Most likely he became interested in being an agent from his father-in-law Mr. Muth as that was Muth's job before John later took on the job.


He moved to Madra SD (1920) with his 1st wife Fern Annette Muth, who died of complications during surgery.


Then to Marvin,SD (13 years) when his wife, Fern, passed away. Roscoe Loomis, SD 1933-1936); Hosmer, SD (1936-1940); before coming to Langford, SD (1940-1960)

Mr. Nicholas is preceded in death by his first wife, Fern Annette Muth (1899-1923) born in Mason City, Cerro Gordo county, Iowa; a brother, Harry James Nicholas (1888-1952) who died in a private plane crash with his cousin George Chard (54); and a sister, Violet Mary Nicholas Hescke (1887-1909); and both of his parents, Benjamin Nicholas (born in Wales) and Cora Brainard Nicholas (born in St. Lawrence Co, NY).


He is survived by his 2nd wife, Elsie Anderson Nicholas,

1. Darlene⁵ Louise Nicholas b. Oct. 4, 1924 Marvin, SD d. Dec. 16, 2020 Redding, CA m. Helmut Jakob Keppler Jun 19, 1943 in Aberdeen, SD a devout Christian and author. m 2nd to Roy Edward Holdman in 2003 in Redding, CA. (2 children: Diane Lynn and Daniel "Dan" Keppler

2. Doris Nicholas (Jack) Zerfas of Sioux Falls, SD

two grandchildren, Diane Lynne , Missionary to Papa New Guinea, and Danny Keppler; his sister, Grace Edna Nicholas (Charles H.) Rowe of Brea, CA and 3 step brothers, Maurice, Bert and Roy Robbins from his widower father Benjamin's second marriage to Alpherada Robbins.


Out of town guests were Rev. Ralph Edward Rowe (Methodist minister. His mother and John were siblings) and daughter Evelyn May Rowe of Fargo, ND; Darlene(Nicholas) and husband Helmet Keppler of Torrance, CA; Doris Nicholas and fiancé, Jack Zerfas of Souix Falls, SD; Mr. & Mrs. Reuben Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Anderson brother of Mrs. Elsie Nicholas; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Anderson and Mr. and Grs. Gerald Anderson, Nephews; Andrew Anderson brother of Mrs. Nicholas, Mankato MN.
