Mathias Grob was born in Germany May 24, 1849. When four years of age he came to this country and the family settled near Cleveland, Ohio.
His marriage to Martha Kuellmer occurred Nov. 4, 1879. Nine children were born to them, three dying in infancy and Elizabeth passing away in November, 1918. Those surviving are Edward Grob, Eudora, Mrs. Emma Cobb, De Soto, Mrs. Mattie Large, Linwood, Mrs. Katie Linden and Fred Grob, De Soto.
Mr. Grob came to Kansas in 1883, settling in Leavensworth county near Elm Grove school house, later moving near Jewett where he lived until the spring of 1919 when he moved to De Soto where he has since resided.
Mr. Grob took a severe cold about the middle of August and was confined to his home but it was not generally known that he was seriously ill. His death occurred at the family home on north Wyandotte Sunday afternoon, Sep. 5, 1926, at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 12 days. Besided the wido and children he is survived by a half-brother, Henry Grob, Elyria, Ohio, and a half-sister at Vermillion, Ohio. He also leaves eight grandchildren.
Mr. Grob was a self made man in the truest sense of the word, and almost unaided except by his own efforts, came to be a well informed man and a prosperous land owner. He was an earnest active Christian, having professed faith in Jesus Christ in early manhood, and never neglected an opportunity of attending services unless prevented by illness. He was generous in his support of good causes and could be depended upon. He was an excellent Bible student and able to give light on many perplexing questions, and will be sadly missed.
The funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, his pastor, Rev. R. B. Alexander, of the Methodist church speaking words of consolation and cheer to the many old neighbors and friends assembled to pay their last tribure of respect to one the loved. Interment was made in the Lenape cemetery.
