Muenster - Surrounded by his family, Mike Kleiss, 59, died at his home Saturday, February 13, as a result of the throat and chest infection that had kept him confined to his bed since June 1 of last year.
A high mass for the repose of his soul was read by the Rev. Father Frowin Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock and immediately afterward he was interred in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Pallbearers were Felix Becker, Victor Hartman, Andrew Hofbauer, Frank Bayer, Joe Mages, and Joe Hoenig all members of the St. Joseph Society.
With his recent sinking spell almost a week before his passing, his family and friends feared that the end was near. Mr. Kleiss, already weak from his extended illness, lost his strength rapidly when he began bleeding at the open infection on his chest and at the same time was unable to partake in nourishment. His daughter, Sr. Aloysia Kleiss was notified and arrived in time to see him in the end.
The first knowledge of this ailment was discovered about two years ago when he spent several days with a sore throat and he was unusually hoarse. After his recovery he suffered no pain but was only able to speak in a normal tone of conversation. If he tried to raise his voice, his vocal chords would not work.
Mike Kleiss was born in Pesotum, Illinois to Joseph and Maria Hettinger Kleiss. He was a prominent member of the community since his arrival in 1901. He married Angeline Rohmer and they lived the first year of their married life in Pesotum. The climate was better here and they decided to stay.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Joe, John and Aloys; and three daughters, Sr. Aloysia of Blytheville, Ark., Mrs. C.M. Walterscheid, and Mrs Clem Hofbauer all of Muenster; four sisters, Sr. Anastasia of Falls City, Neb., Mrs. Emil Vogel, Mrs. Charles Cler, and Miss Lena Kleiss. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Louise, two sons, Anthony and Albert a sister Mary D. Kleiss and a brother George Kleiss.
