Joseph Gast was born to Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth (Bauer) Gast in St. Bonifacius. He married Sophie Boser on June 27, 1933, in Sacred Heart Church, Little Falls. The couple farmed in the Hillman and Little Falls areas until Oct. 15, 1941, when the family moved to Center Valley. He worked at Northwest Paper Co. ã Potlatch Corp. from 1950 to 1970.
Survivors include his two sons and four daughters; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1987; and sons, Gerald in 1975 and Fred in 1977.
