OXFORD - Mr. Robert Douglas BARKER Sr., age 74, of 5658 Tabbs Creek Rd., died Thursday, November 7, 2002, in Durham Regional Hospital. Mr. BARKER was a native of Granville Co. and the son of the late Charles Macon and Mabel Hart BARKER. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was a retired farmer and also a former business partner in BARKER Brothers Texaco and Jimmies Dress Shop. He was also a master wood craftsman and was known for the fine things he built and sold throughout the area. He was a lover of singing gospel music, and he sang bass with the Golden Chords Senior Citizens Singing Group and also with the Volunteers, a group that goes to nursing homes each week to share the ministry of music.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Ruth Breedlove BARKER. Surviving are one son, Robert D. (Rob) BARKER Jr. of Oxford; two granddaughters, Meghan BARKER and Brittany BARKER; three brothers, Ollie BARKER and wife, Carolyn of Oxford, Laurie BARKER of Oxford, and Dan T. BARKER and wife, Ellenor of Fayetteville; one sister, Mrs. Celeste BARKER Knott and husband, Julian of Raleigh; five sisters-in-law, Anne B. BARKER, Helen Pruitt and husband, W.E., all of Oxford, Thelma Flowers and husband, Carlton of Charlotte, and Eva BARKER and Doris Breedlove, both of Oxford; step-mother, Mrs. Bessie W. BARKER of Oxford; many nieces and nephews; and also a very close friend, Virgie E. Eaves.
