He was educated in Granville schools, served in the U.S. Army, and retired in 1994 as a leaf purchaser and supervisor for Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. in Richmond, Va. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Culbreth Barker, M.D., of the home; one daughter, Hellen Elizabeth (Beth), and husband Bob Anderson, of Yardley, Pa.; two sons, Roy Tilman Barker of Raleigh and Michael Keith Barker, and wife Sheryl, of Apex.

"Papa" will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren, Benjamin Maxwell Anderson and Lydia Alane Anderson of Yardley, Pa., and Madison Faith Barker and Jackson Wrenn Barker of Apex; one sister, Celestia B. Knott of Raleigh; two brothers, Laurie B. Barker of Oxford and Dan T. Barker Sr. of Fayetteville; his stepmother, Bessie W. Barker of Oxford; and a loyal family friend, Earlene F. Young of Oxford.

He was predeceased in death by four brothers, Roy, Charles, Jerry and Doug, and one sister, Mabel Jean Barker; all of Oxford.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Thurman Horney and the Rev. John Yount. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
