Herman "Butch" Vogel was born on March 22, 1941, in Leavenworth, to Vinita Ellen Kent and Herman William Vogel. He passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008.

He was a native of Leavenworth. He went to St. Paul's Lutheran School and Lansing High School.

He married Karen Abbott on May 31, 1962. He then went to work for Kansas State Penitentiary in September 1962. He retired as a captain in March 1989.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Leavenworth.

He was a musician. He loved his guitar. He played the guitar since he was 11 years old. He was in numerous bands over the years. He loved country music and old rock and roll. He also loved rhythm and blues.

He was well liked by many in Leavenworth and the St. Joseph, Mo., areas. His life surrounded around his children.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Sheila of Doylestown, Pa.; a son, Eldon of Wathena, Kan.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Zimmerman of Canyon Country, Calif.; a sister, Toni White of Millington, Tenn.; and his aunts, "Sisters" Shirley Collie of Glen Ellen, Ill., and Billie Chesney of Kingsport, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Martha Bullard; and his parents, Vinita Zimmerman and Herman Vogel.

The wake will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at the funeral chapel. The graveside service will be at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing.

Donations can be sent to Immaculate Conception Church in Leavenworth.
