Howard Dudley Mammen November 8, 1922 – August 15, 2008 Howard was seventh of ten children born to John and Maggie Mammen. He was born in Lockwood, Missouri, and grew up in Golden City, where he lived until he joined the Army in 1943. His unit, the 458th Battalion, received several citations and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was also a member of American Legion Post #0676. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Golden City. Howard fell in love and married Nora Ruth Kinnick. They lived in Lockwood before moving to Springfield, where they raised their three children. Howard was the plant operator for Griesmer Stone Company and retired after 33 years of service. He was a long time member of Schweitzer United Methodist Church. He spent much of his time teaching his children and grandchildren to love the outdoors, to hunt, fish, hike, and garden. The favorite activity of his grandchildren was driving the garden tractor with "Grandad." Howard was a loving husband to Nora Ruth for 62 years. He was the best "Daddy" to his children, Derinda King, Derius Mammen and Delisa Sims. Grandad will also be missed by seven grandchildren, Todd and Tiffany King, Megan Mammen and MacKenzie McKinney, Jordan, Alexa, and Micah Sims; and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Ruth Wagener and Dolly Slusher; and a great number of nieces and nephews will miss him dearly. Brothers Harold, Bob, Bill and Louis Mammen; and sisters, Betty Singer, Nell Tubaugh and Louise Gordon preceded Howard in death. Celebration of life will be held in Schweitzer United Methodist Church, Wednesday, August 20 , 2008, at 11 a.m., under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m., in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 5201 South Southwood, Springfield.
