DIED -
Elizabeth Blakely, daughter of Charles and Lucetta Blakely, was born October 6, 1831, in Morgan County, Illinois. When she was but a child she came to Jefferson County, Iowa, with her parents, where she lived until she was married to Gordon Menoher, in June 1856. To this union were born six children all of whom grew to manhood. Two preceded her in death, John H.[arvey], of Salina, Kansas, and Dr. J. [ames] A. [lexander] Menoher, of Manhattan, Kans. The four living sons are C. [harles] B. [lakely] Menoher, Lenox, Iowa; B. [enjamin] F.[ranklin] Menoher, Clarinda, Iowa; W. [illiam] E[dgar] Menoher, Lake Worth, Florida, and Rev. E. [dwin] S. [mith] Menoher, Corning, Iowa. The husband and father died when the children were small, leaving the mother the responsibility of training them. She with her family went to the home of her parents, near Fairfield, Iowa, and remained for a few years. In 1874 they moved to Taylor County and settled on a farm near where Gravity is now located. Here they lived until the boys were all grown. She with her family then moved to Gravity where she lived until five years ago when because of poor health and declining years she went to live with her children. For the past three years she had lived at Villisca with E.[dwin] S. [mith] Menoher and family, but just before their removal to Corning, she was taken to the home of her son, C.[harles] B. [lakely] in Lenox, at whose home Friday, October 14, at 1:30 p. m., she quietly fell asleep in Jesus after a short illness.
On October 6th she celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Three sons, two daughters-in-law and one sister beside other friends were present and she enjoyed the day very much. She had two sisters living, Mrs. Kate Adams, of Gravity and Mrs. Maggie Dickerson, of Inavale, Nebr.; and one brother, Rev. John Blakely, at Springview, Nebr. She has 13 grandchildren living and 6 great grandchildren. She united with the M. E. church when young and has been a devoted Christian for more than 70 years.
The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Gravity, Sunday at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. A. Moore, Supt. of the Creston district, assisted by Rev. Fellows, pastor of the M. E. church at Gravity; Rev. Nayle, pastor of the M. E. church at Lenox, and Rev. J. L. Boyd, pastor of the M. E. church at Villisca.
