Vester was the second of seven children born to Elonzo Carroll and Ida Catherine (Smithson) Jones. He married Ruby Lee Underhill in 1920 and they had five children: Winnie Gertrude, Sally Oleta, Willie Evelyn, Mary Eleanor and Arvil Gaius 'Buddy'.
