Emma was a daughter of Heinrich & Margaret (Husmann) Sander and born in Dahlskamp, Diepholz, Niedersachsen, Germany. Her twin sister, Sophie Karoline Sander died in Germany on 24 Nov 1873.

Emma emigrated with her parents and half-siblings to America, arriving in the Port of New York on 3 May 1875 on the S.S. Main from Bremen, Germany. Her family settled on a farm in Jackson County, Wisconsin, near Ettrick and Melrose. Emma's half-sister, Mary Sander, married Henry Stratman and moved to Sarpy County. Mary and husband Henry are also buried in Springfield Cemetery.


She was the wife of Adolph Nielsen and mother of Alma Nielsen Mundt, Otto Nielsen, Henry Nielsen, and Ernest Nielsen.
