Lena was identified as the daughter of Margaretha Husmann at the time Margaretha married Heinrich Sander [source: Personal notes of Vergie (Sander) Zeman, Oct. 1992]. She was listed in the passenger ship records as "Line" [sic] Hussmann (age 7) when she immigrated to the U.S. from Germany with her mother and step-father Heinrich Sander in 1875, though that record does not indicate family relationships.

The surname "Husmann" is clearly her mother's maiden name because Margaretha's brother Henry is buried near her at South Beaver Creek Cemetery [same source]. Another source (http://person.ancestry.com/tree/80411516/person/42420937476/facts) indicates that Lena was born out of wedlock and thus the surname "Husmann", but offers no authoritative evidence. In the 1880 Federal Census for Jackson Co, WI, Lena is identified as Henry's daughter and her surname as Sander. Lena's death certificate (Hennepin Co, Minn) does not indicate her maiden name, nor the names of her father and mother.

Lena married John Spencer ca. 1888 and soon thereafter moved to Winona, Minnesota (1895 Minnesota state census). John died in 1912 and Lena moved to Minneapolis to live with her daughter Opal V Scott (1920 census record). Lena died in 1923. Both she and her husband John are buried in Wood Lawn Cemetery in Winona, Minnesota; as is her daughter Opal and son-in-law Earl Scott.
