Son of Barnabas Stephens & Charity Brown of Bladen Co NC. He was married at least twice. The name of his first wife is unknown. He is listed on the 1800 Marion Dist SC census with a wife, 3 daughters & 3 sons.

Based on numerous DNA matches, one of these older sons is believed to be William M Stevens/Stephens who can be found in Henry Co GA, Randolph Co AL and Carroll Co GA. William was born about 1787 in SC and died after 1860. He was also married twice, name of first wife unknown, 2nd wife Elizabeth. DNA matches, as well as family documents suggests that his children included Thomas S Stephens who lived in Henry Co GA, Heard Co GA and Randolph Co AL, as well as Simeon Sylvester Stephens, Joseph Herrington Stevens Sr, Nancy, John, Delia, Reubin and Absolom Stevens. The earlier census records record an additional 5 unnamed males and 2 unnamed females.

Reuben & his 2nd wife, Elizabeth, had at least 2 sons, Joseph Smith Stevens, linked below, and Gray Stevens, born about 1827. Gray died after 1880 in TX.

Gray was first married to Mary Ann Smythe on 7 Dec 1854 in Bexar Co TX. They had 2 daughters. Harriet Stevens, b. Oct 1855, married Joseph Bartlett Shannon on 1 Dec 1870 in Live Oak Co TX, and raised a family of 9 children. Jenny Melissa Stevens married Berry Abraham Eversole on 10 Sep 1874 and raised a family of 12 children.

Gray's 2nd wife was Rhoda Frances Allen whom he married on 2 Jan 1874 in Bosque Co TX. They had 1 daughter and 1 son. Sophronia Elizabeth Stevens married Jesse James Ewing on 1 May 1893 in Tarrant Co TX. William Jackson Stevens married Laura M Wilson on 21 Sep 1899 in Tarrant Co TX.

Reuben was a Revolutionary War Veteran from North Carolina and South Carolina. He served as ensign in 3rd Regiment, (Moore's) North Carolina Militia under Captain Caleb Stephens. He resided in Marion Co SC in 1800, Clarke Co GA 1820, and Coweta Co GA 1833. By 1840 he was in Chambers Co AL.

1855 Bounty Land Application:

On this the seventh of April A.D. one thousand Eight hundred and fifty five Personally appeared before me A Justice of the peace within and for the County and state aforesaid Ruben Stevens aged 93 years a resident of Chambers County in the state of Alabama who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Reuben Stevens who was a sergeant in the Company Commanded by Captain James Johnson in the Regiment of North Carolina Militia Commanded by Col. Archibald Little in the Revolutionary war begin in A.D. 1775 At Lexington and Closed in 1782 by the Acknowledgment of the Independence of the Thirteen United States (or colonies).

I was first drafted in Bladen Co., N.C. and then volunteered at Charleston, S.C. on or about the 1st day of Oct or Nov A.D. 1779 – for the Term of three months (drafted) and continued in Actual service in said war for this term of fourteen days (or more and was taken prisoner at the fall of Charleston in A.D. 1780. I don't recall the day or month at this time I think in May about between 10 and 15th.

He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act Approved March 3rd A.D. 1855 He also declares that he has not received a war grant for bounty land under this or any other act of Congress nor made any other Application therefor. I made application on the Act of 1850 but I got no warrant as I did not come under that act and I relinquish all other claims
