(History of Sarah Elanner Hiatt Zell)

"I was two years old," said Mrs. Zell "when we went to Pomeroy. I started in the primary school and finally graduated from high school. I met and married my first husband Robert V. Hutchins at Pomeroy. We had two children. My daughter died and my boy Edbert, who has taken his stepfather's name, lives here in Newberg. I married my present husband, Mr. Zell, on May 13, 1906. We have one son, Norman who after serving in the marines, settled at Bremerton, where he works for an electric light company. We moved to Newberg 11 years ago. My husband's father was an Oregon pioneer. My husband can tell you about his folks.

"My father, Pete Zell, crossed the plains in 1852, settling in the forks of the Santiam," said Mr. Zell. "My mother, whose maiden name is Sarah Hiatt, is 82 years old and lives at Prineville. After my father's death she married Charles Dealy. My father's first wife died at Scio, leaving three children. My half-brother, Frank Zell, who was born near Scio on July 19, 1867, runs a second-hand store at Jacksonville, Oregon. After the death of Father's first wife, Father went back to Iowa, where he married my mother Sarah Hiatt on April 20, 1873. We came by team from Iowa to the Ochoco country in Crook county, in 1879. It took us four months to make the trip.

"I was four years old when we crossed the plain. When I was 10 years old we moved to what was known as Farewell Bend. Father bought 80 acres, mostly in timber, about half a mile above Farewell Bend, of course you know that the town of Bend takes its name from Farewell Bend. We lived at Farewll Bend for seven years and then moved to Medford, where we lived three years, after which we moved back to Crook county. When I lived in Crook county, I rode the range seven years. I drove stage and I freighted from Shaniko to Prineville, a distance of about 60 miles. My wife and I left Prineville in 1918 and went to Portland. From Portland we moved to Vancouver, where we lived about a year. We then bought a place four miles south of Newberg, where I ran a store three years.

"My sister, Mrs. Mattie Edwards, lives at Prineville. Sometimes when you are up that way drop in and see her, for she can tell you quite a lot about early days on the Ochoco and also at Farewell Bend."
