Orel Eugene Smith

Orel Eugene Smith was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota, November 13, 1882 and departed this life June 23, 1973 at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 10 days.

He attended school and grew to manhood in Jackson County, Kansas. He gave his heart to Christ in 1902 uniting with the Methodist church.

He was united in marriage to Mabel Minnie Danford of Red Oak, Iowa, December 7, 1904.

After farming for several years in Iowa, in 1918 they moved with their family to a farm near Soldier.

This union was blessed with eight children, five sons and three daughters. He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel, November 24, 1959, one daughter, Anna Hoppe, November 1948; and a son Wayne, February 1973.

Survivors include two daughters: Mrs. Isilda Wright, Sidney, Iowa and Mrs. Velma Haag of Topeka; four sons: Eugene, Overland Park, Eldon, LaPuente, Califorina, Ernest and Glenn of Soldier: sister, Mrs. Iva Adams, Holton; 27 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services where held at the Mercer Funeral Home on June 26 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Les Peterson officiated. Vocal music was furnished by Clyde Rieschick and Claude Rieschick. They were accompanied by Mrs. Dean Stous.

Pallbearers were: Bob Markham, Dale Jepson, Gaylord Tribble, Virgil Proctor, Keith Rieschick and Gene Freel. Interment was in the Holton Cemetery.
