Uela May Hunting Hansen was called home to our Heavenly Father on July 22, 2008 at 1:55 p.m. She passed away quietly at home following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Uela was born Dec. 24, 1941 in Vernal and was the first of eight children born to Uel Charles Hunting and Ruth Bingham.

She was a joy and a blessing to her parents. She was given the name of Uela after her father's name in Tahitian. She was and still is known by her close family as "Ueda May" (emphasis on the "D" instead of the "L" sound"), in fact she often called herself "Wada." Uela loved her role as "Big Sister."

As a young girl she loved the time spent with her family playing "Kick the Can" and deer hunting. Another fond memory was cooking with family, pies being her favorite. As a youth she learned to work hard by helping her parents in their endeavors. She worked in fruit stand, bean fields, and in her father's glass shop. She grew up in Cache Valley, near Logan, where she attended North Logan Elementary and graduated from South Cache High. Uela May went on to attend and graduate with a bachelor's degree in home economics from Utah State University. Part way through college, at the age of 21, she served a full time mission in the British Mission assisted with the loving support of a dear friend, Pearl Budge.

She taught school in Alamo, Nev., where she had the opportunity to meet her future husband. On June 19, 1968, she wed J. Dean Hansen in the St. George LDS Temple for time and all eternity. At the wedding reception that evening she posed with her husband and his four children, whom she went on to raise to maturity. Together she and Dean went on to have an additional nine children.

Uela took opportunities throughout her years of motherhood to teach, including many years working at Head Start. Uela May was an avid reader, she had a great love of music, and she loved to sew. The wedding dresses she sewed blessed the lives of her daughters as well as many others and the quilts she made over the years have brought warmth to many hearts and homes.

Uela believed in food storage. In her first year of marriage, Uela canned approximately 1,000 jars of fruits and vegetables. In later years her children often went "shopping" in her storage room.

Any where Uela went she left behind a legacy of service, especially in Cub Scouts and in many other auxiliaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Uela received her Silver Beaver award for her many years of service in scouting. Uela May was a wonderful confidant. She could lift most anyone's spirits. She was often heard to give the advice to "count your many blessings," and "this too shall pass."

Uela is survived by her husband of 40 years, J. Dean Hansen; her children and their spouses, Matthew D. and Jean Hansen, Mark and Chris Hansen, Janice Ferrell, Timothy Hansen (div. Andrea Perisho Hansen), Evelyn and Brad Grammer, Sarah and Daniel John, Uel and Amber Hansen, James and Doris Hansen, Jewel and Peter Tibbett, John and Marlee Hansen, Mary and Ben Hacking, Pearl and Jent Sheffer, Nathan Hansen; 49 grandchildren; her siblings and their spouses, Larris and Peggy Hunting, Fred and Carol Hunting, Sarah and Max Young, Robert and JoAnn Hunting, Steve and Pat Hunting, Ann and Lee Nash, and John and LorRin Hunting. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Norman Ferrell; sisters-in-law, Barbara Marsing Hansen and Jean Hansen Newell.

Uela May was a wonderful mother. She loved her Savior and her fellowmen and served them throughout her mortal existence.

Funeral services were Friday, July 25, at 2 p.m. in the Uintah LDS Stake Center. A viewing was Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the chapel one hour prior to services. Interment was Saturday, July 26, in the Hiko-Scholfield Cemetery in Hiko, Nev., under the direction of Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
