Avie was born to William Francis Luman and Virginia Evangeline Foxworthy in Kentucky. At 18 he left home and followed his brother to the South and later to Canada where he was a cowboy and homesteaded. He offered to move a woman and her children to California where he fell in love with a redhead by the name of Gladys Leona Ryan. He married her.
