A BIOGRAPHY OF ELIZABETH BAIRD/BEARD MCKIBBEN, by Laurence Overmire (4G Grandson), genealogist and family historian, updated July 2020:

Formerly thought to be the daughter of John and Agnes (Eggleston?) Beard, Elizabeth's parentage is unfortunately unknown. We have hit a brick wall.

Elizabeth's maiden name was thought to be Beard, but some family records show her name as Baird and she named one of her sons Hugh Baird McKibben.

Elizabeth was born Feb. 27, 1772 in Pennsylvania, possibly Clark's Gap, Guilford Township. She married James Westley McKibben Jr. about 1790 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. They were Presbyterians.

Initially, they settled in Lurgan Township, Pennsylvania, on James's father's farm. Sometime after 1798, they moved to North Beaver Township, Pennsylvania.

James and Elizabeth had 8 known children:
1) John McKibben (1793-bef 1810)
2) Sarah "Sally" McKibben (1794-aft. 1870, m. John Chambers)
3) Martha McKibben (1797-1805)
4) James (III) McKibben (1799-1871, m. Sarah D. "Sally" Smith)
5) Joseph McKibben (1801-1877, m. Mary Belle Bovard)
6) Hugh Baird McKibben (1804-1868, m. Isabella Chambers)
7) Thompson McKibben (1806-1866, m. Elizabeth "Betsey")
8) Agness McKibben (1808-1889, m. James Ewing)

James died in 1832 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth subsequently moved to Butler, Richland County, Ohio, where she was living with her son James and his family in 1850. She died Nov. 6, 1850, at the age of 78, and was buried in Savannah Cemetery next to her granddaughter Minerva Harriet N. McKibben, daughter of Joseph and Mary Belle (Bovard) McKibben.

THE UNKNOWN PARENTAGE OF ELIZABETH BAIRD/BEARD, by Laurence Overmire:

It was generally believed that Elizabeth Baird/Beard who married James McKibben was the daughter of John (1756-1805) and Agnes (Eggleston?) Beard of Beaver County, Pennsylvania. That John Beard died in 1805. He and his sons John and Hugh Beard were all living in Youngstown, Ohio, at the time. John wrote his will on Nov. 5, 1805. In the will John mentions his daughter Agnes Willson. Elizabeth Baird/Beard McKibben did have a sister Agnes, but she married Hugh McKibben (James's brother) in 1790 and is buried with him in Seneca County, Ohio. She could not possibly have married a Willson.

Furthermore, Elizabeth Baird/Beard McKibben had another sister Hannah who is not mentioned in John Beard's will at all. Hannah was the twin of Agnes Baird/Beard. She married John McKibben, the twin brother of Hugh McKibben, who married Hannah's twin sister Agnes. The two sets of twins were married together in a double ceremony June 22, 1790 at Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg, PA. (PA VITAL RECORDS, VOL 1, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Marriages, 1761-1800, shows the Beards were of Clark's Gap, Franklin Co.)

John Beard's will mentions his daughter Betsey, but he does not identify her with a married name. You would think he would identify his daughters by their married names - McKibben.

These facts strongly suggest that John and Agnes (Eggleston?) Beard were NOT the parents of Elizabeth, Agnes and Hannah Baird/Beard McKibben.

It could be that John Beard of Beaver County was a relation of the three Baird/Beard sisters, but more evidence is needed to determine who their parents actually were.

American Poet, Laurence Overmire, wrote a poem "Ancestor" in tribute to Elizabeth Baird McKibben, while visiting her grave at Savannah Cemetery, OH. This poem was first published in the magazine RED CORAL, edited by John Curl:

ANCESTOR

I touch this stone
Barely legible
My great great great great grandmother
The face I've never seen
Not even a picture, no photograph remains
But here you lie
Your bones beneath the ground
So close, my journey so long
To find you here
This quiet field
Hot summer's day
We spend a moment, not as brief as it would seem
Enough perhaps to know
You've been here all the while
And I, in the return to this
Sacred place
Regain some lost part of myself
The future a little less forbidding
The same sky, the same sun, the same story
