Mrs. Emma Smart was an incredible lady. In her later years, even though she had lost her sight and her hearing, she went to church because she wanted everyone to know "whose side she was on". Her gentle spirit and silent witness were powerful and are remembered to this day. Here is a poem written by Mozel (Dempsey) Brisco on September 15, 1973 in honor of Mrs. Smart:
IN MEMORY OF MRS. SMART - A WONDERFUL PERSON
There is an empty place now at the end of the pew.
This sweet old lady was always there,
and as everyone knew
Her eyesight was almost gone and her hearing was very poor,
But she was always happy to enter through the church door.
After ninety-four years of spreading sunshine along the way,
The twelfth of September was her very special day
When the Lord called her home to receive her reward.
And to those who knew her best,
Her memory will linger on to be an inspiration to others, to follow in her steps.
