We had our cat Tina, "Athena," put to sleep as she suffered from a thyroid disorder. The disorder had made her so weak and thin, and for the past couple of days, she'd had difficulty holding anything down. We'd been putting it off as long as possible but decided it was time as we didn't want her to suffer.

We brought her home and buried her by the big tree in the front yard next to our cat Lucie whom we lost in October 2007.

Tonight, our hearts are filled with grief and a certain emptiness.

Many years ago, we'd taken in a beautiful stray black cat whom we called Styx, and it turned out that she was expecting. When she had kittens, we kept them all. Tina is from this litter.

In a way, Tina was a miracle cat.

I was disappointed after the litter was born, because I'd wanted a black cat so badly and neither of the two kittens were. Well, lo and behold, the next day, there was suddenly a black kitten among the group. Tina had been born a day late.

She was always somewhat "off," a bit retarded. We believe this is because of her late birth, that her brain was affected, perhaps due to a lack of oxygen.

Though not overly intelligent, Tina was a sweet cat and a good friend. I always thought she was a bit "magical" as well.

She will be missed.
