J.N. Snyder was born at Onida, New York, May 25, 1834, and departed this life July 4, 1926, at the home of his daughter in Denver, Colorado at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 10 days.

He was married May 25, 1856 at Belleville, Canada to Mary Jane Baldwick then went back to Onida and lived until 1860 when they moved to Momence, Illinois. In 1868 thy moved to Story County, Iowa, and from there to Republic County, Kansas in 1876, where he lived on the farm till 1890, when he came to Belleville, Kansas where he made his home until the last seven years. A part of these years were spent in California and the rest in Denver, Colorado.

To this union were born nine children, seven daughters and two sons. He wife passed away on July 30, 1891. Three daughters and a son still survive. On January 26, 1893 he was married to Flora Smith, at Onide, New York. To this union one son, Forest, was born. She passed away April 6, 1919. Since that time he has made his home with his children, the last two and a half years with his youngest daughter in Denver, Colorado.

He united with the Christian church many years ago. He was always at church and Bible school even in his declining years he went when health permitted. He leaves to mourn his death, two sons. J.G. and Forest Snyder, of Belleville; three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Belveal, of Butte, Montana, Mrs. Daisy Fraser, of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Maggie Colville, of Belleville; one step-son, Walter Smith, of Belleville; also 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild and a host of friends.

He belonged to John Brown Post G.A.R., Belleville, Kansas. Mr. Snyder enlisted in August, 1862, at Momence, Illinois and was enrolled as Private M, Company H., 76th Illinois Berland, under General Rosecrans, took part in the campaign against Price in Missouri and was in the battle of Stone River. He was in the hospital for about eight months in Memphis, Tennessee, and in St. Louis from which place he went home on a furlough on expiration of his furlough joined the Regiment in Tennessee and served with it until the close of the war. He was mustered out and honorably discharged in 1865. In his early youth he was a blacksmith by trade, but when he went to Illinois he began farming and followed this occupation until he retired from the farm and moved to Belleville. So ends a long and useful life.

The funeral services were held in the Christian church, Belleville, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment in the Belleville cemetery.

Grandpa John Nelson Snyder was a very wealthy man. A 160 acre farm with a new two story house was a wedding gift to mother and dad (Forest and Martha Faye Cardwell) where our family was reared, five miles northwest of Belleville. The Christian Church in Belleville had a bronze colored plate glass window with Grandpa Snyders name engraved.
